Is this reading time calculator free?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up. Paste, type or open a text file and the estimate updates live in your browser.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. The counting and timing happen locally in your browser tab, including when you open a text file. This tool does not upload your text or save it on a server.

What reading and speaking speeds does it assume?

Silent reading starts at 200 words per minute and speaking at 140 words per minute. Published studies put average adult silent reading near 200–238 wpm and presentation speaking near 130–150 wpm. These are averages, not promises, and both sliders can be changed to match your own pace.

What is the pause allowance for?

Real speeches include pauses, slide changes and audience reactions. Speaking mode can add a pause allowance (for example 10–25%) on top of the raw speaking time so presentation planning is more realistic.

How accurate is the estimate?

It is a planning estimate only. Real speed changes with language, text difficulty, familiarity and purpose. The honest way to calibrate is to time yourself on one page and then set the sliders to your own pace.

How does it handle Japanese and other scripts without spaces?

Word counting follows spaces, punctuation and browser segmentation. Scripts that do not separate words with spaces, such as Japanese, are approximated, so treat those results as a rough guide and check character counts for strict limits.
